Accessible services and recreation in London

London, Ontario, Canada

A practical London access guide for pools, support people, transit, library delivery, parks, venues and planning a complete visit.

Key information

Plan the whole visit: transport, entrance, activity, washroom and the trip home. Ask about the specific support you need. A map pin, an accessible-building label or a park washroom flag cannot confirm every part of that journey.

Support people and the Access 2 card

The City’s Access 2 information says the cardholder pays the regular City admission or program fee and receives one free or discounted support-person admission. The listed City settings include pools, recreation and community centres, arenas, fields, municipal golf and Storybook Gardens.

That does not mean the cardholder’s own admission is free, or that every private London venue participates. Check the national participating-venue list and the exact activity. Ask a venue about its separate support-person arrangements if you do not have a card.

Conventional and specialized transit

London Transit’s specialized service has an application and eligibility process. It is not a general taxi booking that anyone can make because a journey is difficult. Use the current application and service information for the trip you need.

The provider distinguishes companions from an approved support person. A support person can travel free with confirmed eligibility; companions normally pay the one-way fare and depend on space when booked. Tell the booking team who is travelling and what equipment is used.

Library services when reaching a branch is difficult

London Public Library has a Visiting Library Service with its own eligibility and service arrangements. Ask the library about delivery, borrowing formats and how to choose material if you cannot readily visit a branch.

For an in-person visit, confirm the branch’s entrance, equipment and space you plan to use. A library study room, computer station and public program can have different booking or support needs. The full library guide lists the branches and related services.

Nature, museums and outdoor places

For a park, ask about the surface and distance from the actual entrance to the place you want to reach. An asset coordinate can be inside a site and is not an accessible entrance. Seasonal toilets, mud, snow and construction can change a visit.

Museum London lists automatic doors, elevators to galleries and studios, and accessible universal washrooms. Its general admission is free or pay-what-you-can, while some programs can cost extra. For any venue, confirm the equipment and support needed for the activity rather than relying only on the building description.

Access questions

Does Access 2 make my own admission free?

The City says the cardholder pays the usual admission or program fee. The support person receives one free or discounted admission under the applicable arrangement.

Source: City program registration

Can I rely on a map pin for a step-free entrance?

No. City asset points are location records. Confirm the actual entrance and the route to the room or activity.

Source: City open data

What should I ask before planning an accessible outing?

Check the whole journey: transport, drop-off, the open entrance, internal route, activity, washroom and return trip. Describe your equipment and support needs. A building label alone does not answer every part of the visit.

How do I find a pool with a lift or suitable change facilities?

Use the listed pool access features as a starting point, then contact the exact facility. Confirm the equipment and route needed for your session. A lift at one pool does not establish the same equipment at another.

Which City activities are listed in the Access 2 information?

The City lists pools, recreation and community centres, arenas, fields, municipal golf and Storybook Gardens. Confirm the exact activity and support-person terms before paying. Participation in the scheme does not make every program or extra charge identical.

Does every London venue accept the Access 2 card?

No. Use the national participating-venue list and confirm the exact activity with the venue. Private venues can have different arrangements. Ask about separate support-person policies if you do not have a card.

Can anyone book Specialized Transit when a bus trip is difficult?

No. LTC has an application and eligibility review for people whose disability regularly prevents use of conventional transit. It is not an unrestricted taxi service. Use the current application steps before arranging registered trips.

Is a Specialized Transit companion the same as an approved support person?

No. An approved support person can travel free under LTC’s eligibility rules. Companions normally pay a fare and depend on space when booked. Tell the booking team who is travelling and what equipment is used.

Can I borrow library materials if reaching a branch is difficult?

Ask London Public Library about its Visiting Library Service. It has its own eligibility and arrangements for choosing and receiving materials. For a branch visit, confirm the entrance, equipment and booking needed for the actual service.

What access features can I ask Museum London about?

Museum London lists automatic doors, elevators to galleries and studios, and accessible universal washrooms. Ask about the route and support for the activity you plan to attend. General building access and a specific workshop can involve different arrangements.
