Cycling routes and bike repair in London

London, Ontario, Canada

London bike route planning, every City-listed repair station, parking, training, shared-path rules and clear map links.

Key information

Use the City Bike and Walk Map to plan a route by facility type. The City describes more than 350 kilometres of pathways, lanes and cycle tracks combined. That is a network total, not 350 kilometres of protected bike lanes.

Choose a route by the part that needs most care
Route partPlan for
Busy crossingA safe way across, not just a nearby path
Shared pathPeople walking, mobility devices and slower users
On-street laneTurning traffic, driveways and parked vehicles
Night travelLights, visibility and the whole return route
ConstructionCurrent closures and a usable detour

A cycle track, a painted bike lane, a shared road and a multi-use path offer different conditions. Read the map legend and look at the whole route, including crossings and the final street to your destination. A line on a map does not mean traffic is separated.

The City describes the Thames Valley Parkway as 43 kilometres, connecting to more than 150 kilometres of other pathways. Those figures describe connected networks and should not simply be added to the 350-kilometre network total.

Gibbons Park

TVP by the Grosvenor Street parking lot

Gibbons Park sits beside the Thames River and connects with the Thames Valley Parkway. The park supports walking and several other activities.

The directory details describe the facilities relevant to this guide. Pool sessions and other seasonal facilities have separate opening arrangements. A map point within the park is not necessarily the best entrance for your activity.

What the public repair stations provide

The City lists screwdrivers, common Allen keys, headset and pedal wrenches, box wrenches and tire levers. Stations support simple jobs such as adjusting components, changing a tube or adding air. The tools are not a staffed repair service.

Bring the parts your bike needs, such as a matching tube. Equipment can be damaged or missing, so do not rely on a station as the only way to get home. For a repair beyond your skills or tools, use a bike shop or repair service.

Bike parking, lockers and registration

The City has racks at facilities and along streets, plus enclosed lockers at three downtown locations. Use the City’s current parking map and locker page for the actual locations, booking and charges. A free rack and a reserved locker are different services.

London Police offers bicycle registration through 529 Garage. Record your bike’s identifying details and keep your own purchase record. Registration can help match a recovered bike to its owner; it does not prevent theft or replace secure locking.

Shared paths, sidewalks and electric bikes

The City cycling page says children under 14 may ride on London sidewalks. It does not extend that permission to adult cyclists. On the TVP, the posted limit is 20 km/h unless a different limit is signed.

E-bikes, cargo power-assisted bicycles, electric kick-scooters and mopeds have different rules. The City’s comparison table is the right starting point for the type of device you use. A hiking trail in a natural area is not automatically a cycling route.

Learning, route practice and reporting a problem

The City links to CAN-BIKE training and London Cycle Link’s Ride to Thrive program. Ask about current courses, equipment, ages and supported practice before attending. Practise a new commute at a quieter time and test the difficult crossings first.

For a broken path, obstruction or damaged public facility, use Service London with the nearest street and a clear location. For cycling-network questions, the City lists cycling@london.ca; requests about racks can go to bikeparking@london.ca.

Cycling questions

Are all 350 kilometres protected bike lanes?

No. The City’s figure combines pathways, bike lanes and cycle tracks. Read the map legend for the type of facility on each part of the trip.

Source: City cycling routes, rules and parking

Does every listed bike station have tools?

The City lists seven tool stations. The location at 320 Thames Street is an air pump only.

Source: Every City-listed bike repair station

Does every cycling route on the map separate riders from traffic?

No. Cycle tracks, painted lanes, shared roads and multi-use paths have different conditions. Read the map legend and check crossings and the final approach. A route line by itself does not establish traffic separation.

Are London’s public bike repair stations staffed repair shops?

No. They provide tools for simple work such as adjustments, changing a tube or adding air. You do the repair yourself. Equipment can be missing or damaged, so plan another way home if the station cannot help.

Should I bring a spare tube to a bike repair station?

Bring the parts your bike needs, such as a correctly sized tube. The station’s tools are not a supply of replacement parts. Use a bike shop or repair service for work beyond your tools or skills.

What is the difference between a bike rack and a City bike locker?

A rack is a place to secure your bike with your own lock. An enclosed locker has separate booking and charge arrangements. Use the current City parking and locker information for the actual location and terms.

Does 529 Garage registration prevent a bike being stolen?

No. Registration can help match a recovered bike to its owner. Keep identifying details and your purchase record, and use secure locking. Registration does not replace taking care of the bike or checking where you leave it.

Can adults cycle on London sidewalks under the child cycling rule?

The City page permits children under 14 to ride on sidewalks. That permission does not extend to adult cyclists. Use the current route and device rules for your journey rather than assuming all bicycles have the same permissions.

Source: City cycling routes, rules and parking

Do e-bikes, electric scooters and mopeds use identical local rules?

No. The City compares different device types and their permitted uses. Identify your device before planning the route. A permitted cycle route or natural-area trail should not be assumed to allow every powered device.

Who should I tell about a broken path or damaged bike facility?

Use Service London with a clear location and nearest street for a damaged public facility or obstruction. The City also lists cycling@london.ca for cycling-network questions and bikeparking@london.ca for rack requests.
